SyllaBuddy vs Notion for tracking coursework
Notion student templates are genuinely good and genuinely abandoned by October. Here's the real trade: total flexibility against not having to maintain it.
Updated 2026-09-10
Notion is the most capable option on this page. A well-built assignment database with weights, statuses and rollups will do things no purpose-built app allows, and if you enjoy building it, that's a real advantage.
The catch is well documented by anyone who has used one for two terms: every item is typed in by hand, and the system decays the moment a week gets busy. The database is only as good as your last update.
| SyllaBuddy | Notion | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting deadlines in | Reads the syllabus PDF | Manual entry, or a template you fill in |
| Flexibility | Fixed structure built for courses | Anything you can model |
| Maintenance when a date moves | Tell Buddy in a sentence | Edit the row |
| Grade tracking | Built in, weights come from the outline | Excellent, once you build it |
| Notes, readings, lecture notes in the same place | Course notes only | Yes, and this is where Notion is genuinely better |
| Daily push | Today screen, streak, morning email for big items | You have to open it |
| Answers questions about your courses | Yes, it has read the outlines | Notion AI can search what you typed in |
| Cost | Free | Free for students; AI features cost extra |
When Notion is the right answer
If your notes, readings, essay drafts and group project docs all live in one workspace, and you actually enjoy maintaining it, keep it. Nothing here replaces a good second brain, and a purpose-built deadline app is not trying to.
When it isn't
If you've built the beautiful dashboard twice and stopped updating it both times by week six, the problem was never the design. It was that the data entry never ends. Handing over five PDFs takes five minutes and doesn't decay.
The verdict
They coexist well: keep notes and projects in Notion, let SyllaBuddy own the deadlines and weights it can extract by itself. If you only want one, pick based on whether your failure mode is “I never built it” or “I never maintained it”.
Questions
Can Notion import my syllabus?
You can paste text into a page, but it won't become structured assignments with dates and weights. Notion AI can summarize a document; it doesn't build your term calendar from it.
Is SyllaBuddy customisable?
Less than Notion, deliberately. You can add, remove and re-date items, add your own notes to a course, and tell Buddy in plain words what's different for your section.
