The short version
Brightspace, which McMaster runs as Avenue to Learn, has a personal calendar feed for every student. Google Calendar and Apple Calendar can subscribe to it. Once you do, every due date a prof posts shows up in your real calendar and keeps itself updated.
Get your feed link
In Avenue to Learn:
- Open Calendar from the top navigation.
- Click the gear (Settings) in the calendar.
- Tick “Enable Calendar Feeds” and save.
- Click “Subscribe”. Choose “All calendars” so every course is included.
- Copy the URL it shows. Treat it like a password: anyone with it can see your schedule.
Add it to Google Calendar
On a computer (the mobile app can't add feeds):
- Open calendar.google.com.
- On the left, next to “Other calendars”, click the plus sign.
- Choose “From URL” and paste the link.
- Click “Add calendar”. It appears on the left and syncs on its own. Google refreshes feeds every few hours, not instantly.
Add it to Apple Calendar on iPhone
- Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Account → Other.
- Tap “Add Subscribed Calendar” and paste the link.
- Tap Next, then Save.
What you'll notice
Only things the prof actually entered in Avenue appear. Many profs put deadlines in the syllabus PDF and never touch the Avenue calendar, so the feed is often incomplete. The syllabus is still the source of truth.
SyllaBuddy reads the syllabus PDF, builds the full calendar from it, and can also pull in this same Avenue feed so the two are cross-checked. That's the whole reason it exists.
Questions
Why don't my deadlines show up right away in Google Calendar?
Google refreshes subscribed feeds on its own schedule, usually every 8 to 24 hours. There's no button to force it. Apple Calendar can be set to refresh hourly.
Can I do this on the Avenue mobile app?
No. Get the link from Avenue in a browser, then add it in Google Calendar on a computer or in iPhone Settings.
