When does the final exam schedule come out, and what to do while you wait

Why your syllabus says “TBD by the registrar”, roughly when each school posts final exam dates, and how to plan the end of term before you know them.

Why the outline can't tell you

Final exams are scheduled centrally by the registrar, not by your professor, because the whole institution's rooms and invigilators have to be arranged at once. That's why nearly every syllabus says “Date TBD by the Registrar” next to a 35% exam.

Most Canadian universities publish the fall schedule some time in October and the winter schedule some time in February, typically four to six weeks before the exam period. Your registrar's exam page will say when.

Plan without the dates

You do know the exam period itself, which is published with the sessional dates before term even starts. Block that entire window as unavailable for anything else: no shifts you can't move, no flights, no commitments.

Book travel home only after the schedule is posted, or buy something changeable. Every year students discover an exam on the last day of the period after booking a flight for the first.

When it lands, check three things

  1. Conflicts: two exams at the same time, or three in 24 hours, which most schools have a formal deferral process for, with a short deadline to apply.
  2. The room, which is often nowhere near your lecture hall and is sometimes split by surname.
  3. The format and what's allowed: calculator model, crib sheet size, whether it's cumulative. That's in the outline, not the schedule.

The bit that's easy to lose

Add each exam to your real calendar the day the schedule is posted, with the room and the start time, and work backwards from there. SyllaBuddy keeps the undated final in the course until you fill the date in, so it stays visible instead of quietly falling off the plan.

Questions

Can I move a final exam?

Only through the registrar's formal process, and generally only for a scheduling conflict, three exams in 24 hours, a religious observance, or an accommodation. Travel plans are not a reason.

Are deferred exams a thing?

Yes, for illness or emergency, through your faculty rather than your professor, with documentation and a tight filing deadline. Look up your school's process before you need it.
